Meaning of Share
A portion of anything owned in common by several persons. In relation to corporations, it is a definite fractional part of the capital of the corporation conferring upon the holder certain rights to a proportionate part of the assets of the corporation, whether by way of dividend or on distribution of assets in winding up . while the capital of the corporation is its property , the share is the property of the shareholder . See Bank of commerce v Tennessee, 161 U.S. 134,16 S.Ct. 456, 40 L.Ed. 645. The shares of a corporation may be either common or special. Special shares are also known as preference shares, which entitle their holders to priority of dividends over the common shareholders and also to be paid arrears of dividends out of future profits before the common shareholders receive anything. Shares are incorporeal in their nature and are personal property . Snyder v Commr., (C.A.3) 73 F.2d5, affd. 295 U.S. 134, 55 S.Ct. 913, 79 L.Ed. 1710.
Share Alternative Definition
A portion of anything. Sometimes shares are equal; at other times they are unequal. In companies and corporations, the whole of the capital stock is usually divided into equal portions, called “shares.” See “Capital Stock.” The proportion which descends to one of several children from his ancestor is called a “share.” The term “share and share alike” signifies in equal proportions.
