Meaning of Cannabis

A species of plant known as indian hemp, the flowering tops of which produce the resinous alkaloids called cannabis resin which has narcotic properties. With certain exceptions the plant cannabis sativa smoked in marijuana cigarettes is within terms of statute making it unlawful for any person to possess, to have under his control , or to sell any narcotic drug. Escobio v state , (Fla.) 64 So.2d 766. uniform Narcotic Drug /trt§l(13) provides as follows: Cannabis includes all parts of the plant Cannabis SativaL., whether growing or not; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of such plant; and every compound , manufacture , salt, derivative , mixture, or preparation of such plant, its seeds, or resin; but shall not include the mature stalks of such plant, fiber produced from such stalks, oil or cake made from the seeds of such plant, any other compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such mature stalks ( except the resin extracted therefrom), fiber, oil, or cake, or the sterliz- ied seed of such plant which is incapable of germination.

In the context of the English law, A Dictionary of Law provides the following legal concept of Cannabis :

A drug obtained from the crushed leaves and flowers of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa); under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 cannabis is defined as a *controlled drug of Class B, but in October 2001 the Home Secretary announced a decision to reclassify it as a Class C drug. In addition to the offences applying to all controlled drugs, there is a specific offence applying only to cannabis and cannabis resin (and also to prepared opium): it is an offence for an occupier, landlord, or property manager to allow these substances to be smoked on the premises he occupies or manages.
