Definition of Metis

The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Metis: Refers to people who have a mixed biological and cultural ancestry. These were usually mixtures of French and Indian or British/Scottish and Indian. Originally the term referred to the French-Indian people who settled in the Red River area of Manitoba, a group who saw themselves as having a distinct cultural and political position in society and their history is important in understanding Canada. This group is now represented by the Metis National Council. The Native Council of Canada acknowledges other people of mixed ancestry as being Metis.
