Legal Definition and Related Resources of Bargaining Unit

Meaning of Bargaining Unit

In labor law, the term means a group of employees who have bonded together for purpose of bargaining wages and/or benefits with their employer . The standard for an appropriate bargaining unit is whether the members of the unit have a recognizable community of interest sufficiently different from other employees in the terms and conditions of employment so as to warrant their inclusion in a single unit. mutuality of interest serves to assure the coherence among employees necessary for efficient collective bargaining and also to prevent a functionally distinct minority group of employees from being submerged in an overly large unit. See Allied Chemical & Alkali Workers of America v Pittsburg Plate Glass Co., 404 U.S. 157, 30 L.Ed.2d34l, 92 S.Ct. 383.
