Meaning of Regalia

Royal rights which a King has by virtue of his prerogative . These include the power of judicature, of life and death , of war and peace ; over abandoned or ownerless goods ; assessments and minting of money .

Regalia Alternative Definition

This seems to be an abbreviation of “jura regalia,” royal rights, or those rights which a king has by virtue of his prerogative. Hence owners of counties palatine were formerly said to have “jura regalia” in their counties as fully as the king in his palace. 1 Bl. Comm. 117. Some writers divide the royal prerogative into majora and minora regalia, the former including the regal dignity and power, the latter the revenue or fiscal prerogatives of the crovyn. 1 Bl. Comm. 117.

Traditional meaning of regalia in English (with some legal use of this latin concept in England and the United States in the XIX Century) [1]: (in Latin) Royal rights or prerogatives. Regalia majora: such as are part of the King’s sovereignty, inseparable; minora, such as are created or conferred upon him; see 1st Book (“The Rights of Persons”), Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England 241.
