Meaning of Shoplifting

The wilful taking of possession of merchandise offered for sale in a mercantile establishment with intention of converting the same to the takers own use without paying purchase price thereof. Although at common law it is a form of larceny , it has been made a statutory offense in many jurisdictions which by definition, have eliminated the requirement of proof of felonious or criminal intent or want of consent to the taking. See, e.g., state v Hales, 256 N. C. 27, 122 S. E.2d 768.
