Meaning of Rule

The formula to which conduct must be conformed; a minor law; canon or regulation ; especially a regulation which a person imposes on himself. The word also denotes an order or direction made by a court in an action or other proceeding . In this context, a rule is either absolute or nisi that is to say, calling upon the party to whom it is directed to show cause why such rule should not be made absolute.
