Law-slang for state laws regulating the sale and sellers of investment securities, designed with the aim of preventing state residents from buying a piece of “blue sky,” i.e., nothingness disguised as an opportunity for profit. The statutes vary from state to state, ranging from the perfunctory (and hardly administered) to aggressively enforced detailed regulations of the quality of securities, i.e., not just their mode of sale and level of information disclosure.
