In England, formerly, whenever there were no prisoners for trial at Maiden assizes, it was customary for the sheriff to present a pair of white gloves to the judge of the assize. Also, when sovereign pardoned a man convicted of murder or manslaughter , he presented gloves to the judge and court officers as fees of court. Also, it is an immemorial custom to remove the right glove on taking oath.
