Meaning of Consign
To deliver goods for care or storage and shipment . One who consigns is a consignor and one to whom goods are so consigned is known as the consignee. A consignee is the person to whom the carrier is to deliver a shipment.
Consign Alternative Definition
To send goods to a factor or agent. To deposit with another to be sold, disposed of or cared for, as merchandise or movable property; to send goods to an agent, commission merchant, correspondent or factor, to be sold, stored, etc. 82 111. App. 687. In Civil Law. To deposit in the custody of a third person a thing belonging to the debtor, for the benefit of the creditor, under the authority of a court of justice. Poth. Obi. pt. 3, c. 1, art. 8. The term “to consign,” or “consignation,” is derived from the Latin consignare, which signifies to seal; for it was formerly the practice to seal up the money thus received in a bag or box. Aso & M. Inst, bk. 2, tit. 11, c. 1, § 5. Generally, the consignation is made with a public officer. It is very similar to our practice of paying money into court.
