Meaning of Tribunal

The seat of a judge ; a judicial court . Ordinarily, however, the word is used to denote a person or body exercising judicial or quasi -judicial functions outside of the regular courts.

Tribunal Alternative Definition

The seat of a judge; the place where he administers justice. The whole body of judges who compose a jurisdiction. 155 111. App. 405. The jurisdiction which the judges exercise. The term is Latin, and derives its origin from the elevated seat where the tribunes administered justice.

Etimology of Tribunal

early 15c., “a judgement seat,” from Old French tribunal “justice seat, judgement seat” (13c.) and directly from Latin tribunal “platform for the seat of magistrates, elevation, embankment,” from tribunus “official in ancient Rome, magistrate,” literally “head of a tribe” (see tribune). Hence, “a court of justice or judicial assembly” (1580s).
