Meaning of Retaining Lien
The right of an attorney to retain possession of clients documents, money or other property which comes into his hands professionally, until a general balance due to him for professional services is paid. See Cape hart v church , 69 S.E.2d 127, 136 W. Va. 929. Such a lien is possessory only and may not be enforced by court order . See Application of Weldon, 231 N. Y.S.2d 530, 35 Misc.2d 710.
