Meaning of Preferential Voting

A system under which a voter is permitted or required to express more than one choice of candidates for the same office by indicating on the ballot his first, second and third choice and so on. Under this system, if any candidate receives a majority of the votes in the category of first choice, then he is elected; if not, the number of votes indicating him a second choice are added to the first and if he then receives a majority then he is elected and so on.
