The edge, particularly of land or water . I n stock market , the term refers to borrower’s equity that is the amount he must deposit in cash or in other securities along with the purchased securities to furnish collateral for a loan.

Financial Definition of Margin
This allows investors to buy securities by borrowing money from a broker. The margin is the difference between the market value of a stock and the loan a broker makes. Related: security deposit (initial).
Legal Definition of Margin
The amount paid by the customer when using a broker’s credit to buy or sell a security. Under Federal Reserve regulations, the initial margin requirement since 1945 has ranged from the current rate of 50% of the purchase price up to 100%. (See: Brokers’ loan, Equity)
