Meaning of Ballast
Any heavy substance , such as stone, water or sand, inside a vessel used for the purpose of keeping her in proper trim and from capsizing. Dunnage is placed under the cargo to keep it from being wet by water coming into the hold, or between the different parcels to keep them from bruising and injuring each other . See Great Western Ins. Co. v Thwing, 80 U.S. 672, 20 L.Ed. 607.
Ballast Alternative Definition
Heavy substance carried in the hold of a ship to trim her, and bring her to a safe and proper draft. It differs from “dunnage” (q.v.) 13 Wall. (U.S.) 674. Rock, gravel or other material placed on the roadbed of a railway to support and retain the ties and track.
