Meaning of Star-chamber

A court made permanent in the year 1487 in England, consisting of the chancellor , treasurer and keeper of the Privy Seal, or any two of them and having jurisdiction to try certain offenses such as partiality on the part of the sheriffs in making up panels of jurors, bribery of the jurors, riots and unlawful assemblies as well as against combinations of nobility and gentry. It was used to repress rebellion among the nobility and gentry. The Star- chamber was abolished in the year 1640.
