Meaning of Prothonotary

The chief clerk or registrar of a court . See Werner v Hillman Coal & Coke Co., 300 Pa. 256,150A.471. He is an administrative officer of the court having custody of the court’s records and seals with specific duties including acts of judicial nature incidental to his ministerial duties. He is a member of the judicial department of the government . See People ex rel. Vanderburg v Brady, 275 III. 261, 114 N.E. 25.
