Meaning of Escalator Clause

A clause in a contract that stipulates the increase, under certain conditions, of amounts to become due under the contract. The most common contracts containing escalator clauses are leases and wage settlement contracts. A lease may provide for increase in rents, proportionate to the increase in the cost of living index; may provide that the lessee will have to pay higher amounts for realty taxes annually, as the realty taxes increase every year. A wage settlement contract negotiated by workers union with the management may provide for increase in wages each year relative to the cost of living index.
