Meaning of Township
A civil and political division of a county , created by state legislature, and sometimes vested with certain powers of local government . See union P.R. Co. v Cheyenne, 113 U.S. 516, 5 S.Ct. 601, 28 L. Ed. 1098. Also a territory six miles square surveyed by the government for purposes of entry and sale, and called congressional townships. See Weightman v dark, 103 U.S. 256, 26 L.Ed. 392.
Township Alternative Definition
The public lands of the United States are surveyed first into tracts called “townships,”; being in extent six miles square. The subdivisions of a township are called “sections,” each a mile square, and containing six hundred and forty acres These are subdivided into quarter sections, and from that intolots of forty acres each. This plan of subdividing the public lands was adopted by Act Cong. May 18, 1796. See Brightly, Dig. U. S. Laws, 493. In some states the largest subdivision of a county. See “Town.”
