Meaning of Single Publication Rule

where an issue of a newspaper or magazine or an edition of a book contains a libelous statement , plaintiff has a single cause of action and the number of copies distributed is considered relevent for damages but not as a new cause of action . However, several jurisdictions follow the common law rule that each communication of written or printed matter is a distinct and separate publication of a libel contained therein, giving rise to a separate cause of action.
