Meaning of Simony
The word is derived from Simon Magus who is said to have offered money to the apostles for the power to work miracles. It denotes the corrupt presentation or agreement to present to an ecclesiastical benefice , of selling such things as are spiritual or anything annexed thereto by giving something of a temporal nature for the purchase thereof.
Simony Alternative Definition
In ecclesiastical law. The selling and buying of holy orders or an ecclesiastical benefice. Bac. Abr. By “simony” is also understood an unlawful agreement to receive a temporal reward for something holy or spiritual. Code, 1. 3. 31; Ayliffe, Par. 496.
