Meaning of Letters Patent
In primary sense, the term denoted a writing of the English sovereign sealed with the Great Seal, whereby certain privileges were bestowed upon a person . The term also refers to the charter whereby a corporation is created.
Letters Patent Alternative Definition
The name of an Instrument granted by the government to convey a right to the patentee; as, a patent for a tract of land; or to secure to him a right which he already possesses, as, a patent for a new invention or discovery. Letters patent are matter of record. They are so called because they are not sealed up, but are granted open. See “Patent.”

Open letters; an unsealed document addressed by a government to all persons whom it may concern. Opposed, letters close: a document directed to a particular person, for some special purpose, and therefore closed up and sealed.
