Meaning of Gild
As a verb means to coat with gold or gold leaf; to give a pleasing appearance . As a noun, sometimes spelt guild . In England, for several centuries a gild meant an association of persons of kindred pursuit, formed for the benefit of the members of the association. Generally, gilds were formed by artisans, traders and merchants and each member was required to pay a fixed sum to meet the expenses of the association.
