Meaning of Excise Tax

A tax laid upon the manufacture , sale or consumption of commodities within the country, upon licenses to pursue certain occupations, and upon corporate privileges. A form of indirect tax imposed upon the acts of persons. Roberts v City of Baton Rouge, 108 So.2d 111, 236 La. 526. Has also been defined as something cut off from the price paid on a sale of goods as a contribution to the support of the government . See Eugene Theatre Co. v City of Eugene, 243 P.2d 1060, 194 Or. 603. Also, as a tax imposed on a particular use of property or exercise of a single power incident to ownership. Weaver v prince Georges county , 379 A.2d 399, 281 Md. 349.
