Meaning of Election Contest

A proceeding instituted on behalf of a candidate who has failed in an election against the right of one who has been declared or determined by proper authority to have been successful. At common law . there is no right of action in the unsuccessful candidate but this right has been conferred by statutes, and the procedure is therefore regulated by the statutes.
