In civil law. The act by which an individual informs a public officer, whose duty it is to prosecute offenders, that a crime has been committed. See 1 Brown, Civ. Law, 447; 2 Brown, Civ. Law, 389; Ayliflfe, Par. 210; Poth. Proc. Cr. 2, § 2.
