In ecclesiastical law. An ecclesiastical offlcer, who derives his name from the fact that he presides over ten canons, or prebendaries, at least. There are several kinds of deans, namely, deans of chapters; deans of peculiars; rural deans ; deans in the colleges ; honorary deans; deans of provinces.

Legal Usage of Dean in English
An European Commission document offers the following explanation about the misused of Dean :In British and Irish usage, a ‘dean’ is either a relatively senior priest or the head of a university faculty. At the Court of Auditors, on the other hand, it is the name given to the doyen or chair of the institution’s audit chambers.

Alternatives
‘Dean’ is now the official title at the Court, but, in our dealings with the outside world, we should not be surprised if people think that we have our own in-house clergy (see also ‘hierarchical superior’ and ‘college’). When explaining the role to outsiders, ‘chair’ (-woman, – man -person) or ‘doyen’ might be more informative.
