Legal Definition and Related Resources of Contravention

The act of coming against, of running counter to or of infringing; and the verb contravene means to prevent , to obstruct the operation of and to defeat or nullify. The term is to be distinguished from violation, for the term violation implies not only the infringement or breach , but also a flagrant disregard or non observance of the rule, principle or law. The term violation includes the idea of a volens or of willingness or of mens rea while contravention does not include any notion of willingness or of any act of the will.

In French law. An act which violates the law, a treaty, or an agreement which the party has made. That infraction of the law punished by a fine which does not exceed fifteen francs, and by an imprisonment not exceeding three days.
