Meaning of Compurgator

In Anglo-Saxon law, a compurgator was a neighbor who under oath testified as to the innocence of the accused in a criminal case or in his favor in a civil case. Compurgation is said to be the origin of trial by jury in English law.

Compurgator Alternative Definition

One of several neighbors of a person accused of a crime, or charged as a defendant in a civil action, who appeared and swore that they believed him on his oath. 3 Bl. Comm. 341.
