Meaning of Coast
Appears to have no fixed meaning apart from the context, and could be equally applicable to the space between high and low water marks, or to the territory bordering on the sea, or to that part of the sea which adjoins the land. In modern usage the term shore denotes the line of low water mark along the shore, while the term coast denotes the line of shore plus line where inland waters meet at open sea. See U.S. v state of Louisiana, 363 U.S. 1, 80 S.Ct. 961,4 L.Ed.2d 1025.
Coast Alternative Definition
The margin of a country bounded by the sea. This term includes the natural appendages of the territory which rise out of the water, although they are not of sufficient firmness to be inhabited or fortified. Shoals perpetually covered with water are Hot, however, comprehended under the name of “coast.” 5 C. Rob. Adm. 385c.
