Meaning of Capitulary
In French Law. A collection of laws and ordinances orderly arranged by divisions. The term is especially applied to the collections of laws made and published by the early French emperors. The execution of these capitularies was intrusted to the bishops, courts, and missi regis, and many copies were made. The best edition of the Capitularies is said by Butler to be that of Baluze, 1677. Co. Litt. 191a, Butler”s note 77. In Ecclesiastical Law. A collection of laws and ordinances, arranged by divisions. A book containing the beginning and end of each Gospel which is to be read every day in the ceremony of saying mass. Du Cange.
