The chief justiciary; the principal minister of state, and guardian of the realm in the king”s absence. This office originated under William the Conqueror, but its power was greatly diminished by Magna Charta, and finally distributed among several courts by Edward I. Spelman; 8 Bl. Comm. 38.

[totius Angliae] Chief justiciar [of all England]. Very early in English history, the highest officer of state under the King himself, essentially his viceroy when the King was abroad. By the time of Henry III (ca. 1250), the office had declined to something more “judicial” in the modem sense. He presided in the court aula regis, the precursor of the Court of King”s Bench.
