In old English law, without remedy or way of making amends, especially without the privilege of discharging criminal liability by making a compensatory payment. It came generally to mean unavailing; cf. Shakespeare”s “When in disgrace with fortune and mens eyes,/I all alone beweep my outcast state,/And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries . .. .”
