The definition of Border Search in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
A search conducted at any U.S. national border to detect smuggling and illegal entry. The constitutionally mandated probable cause and warrant requirements for a non-border detention and search are not equally, if at all, applicable to border searches.
