The definition of Bishop in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

A high ecclesiastical officer in a church, especially Roman Catholic, Episcopal, or Anglican. A bishop usually has jurisdiction over some number of priests, and is himself within the jurisdiction of an archbishop. For purposes of holding property and effecting legal and business transactions, a bishop is a corporation sole. See also suffragan.
