(1) Tenants who held their lands at the will of their superior lord, as distinguished from “frank tenants” (g. v.), who were freeholders.

Essentially the same as villeins, i.e., persons whose place in feudal society was dependent upon their performance of “base services,” i.e., manual labor, especially agricultural, rather than “higher” services like counsel to the lord, or military support.
