Concept of “Annus”

Traditional meaning of annus in English (with some legal use of this latin concept in England and the United States in the XIX Century) [1]: (in Latin) A year. Annus deliberandi: the year of deliberation, allowed in Scotch law to the heir to decide whether he will accept the inheritance. Annus et dies: a year and a day. Annus, dies, et vastum: year, day, and waste. Annus inceptus pro completo habetur: a year begun is held as completed. Annus luctus: the year of mourning, following the husband’s death, and during which, in the Roman law, the widow could not marry; see 1st Book (“The Rights of Persons”), Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England 456. Annus utilis: an available year, one during which a right could be exercised or a prescription grow.
