A grant of funds or property from a government to a private person or corporation to assist in the establishment or support of an enterprise deemed advantageous to the public .
Subsidy Alternative Definition
A legislative grant of money in aid of a private enterprise deemed to promote the public welfare. In English Law. An aid, tax, or tribute granted by parliament to the king for the urgent occasions of the kingdom, to be levied on every subject of ability, according to the value of his lands or goods. Jacob.
