Meaning of Collateral Source Rule

This rule means that the compensation awarded to an injured person shall not be reduced by amount of compensation received or receivable by him from independent collateral sources such as an insurance policy to cover his disability . If the injured party receives some compensation for his injuries from sources wholly independent of the wrongdoer, such payment shall not be deducted from damages which he would otherwise collect from such wrongdoer. See Olivas v U.S., (C.A.Ariz.) 506 F.2d 1158.
