Meaning of Zollverein
A union of German states for uniformity of customs, established in 1819. It continued until the unification of the German empire, including Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, Wurtemberg, Baden, HasseCassel, Brunswick, and Mecklenburg- Strelitz, and all intermediate principalities. It has now been superseded by the German empire; and the federal council of the empire has taken the place of that of the ZoU Verein. Wharton.

Zollverein in Global Commerce Policy

Its growth continued through the adhesion of other German states until 1871 when it was subsumed in the newly formed German Empire. The Zollverein is given credit for much of Germany’s economic progress in the first half of the nineteenth century. However, as its early years coincided with the industrial revolution in Germany, its exact contribution to economic development, though clearly substantial, is difficult to assess.
