Meaning of Word
One or more syllables which, when united, convey an idea; a single part of speech. Words will be construed according to their strict and primary acceptation, unless from the context of the writing, and the intention of the parties collected from it, they appear to have been used in a different, sense, or unless in their strict sense they are incapable of being carried into effect. 109 111. 416. This is equally true of words having a technical- meaning unless the very nature of the subject indicates or the context suggests their use in a technical sense. 283 111. 503. The natural import of words is that which their utterance promptly and uniformly suggests to the mind, that which common use has affixed to them; the technical is that which is suggested by their use in reference to a science or profession, that which particular use has affixed to them, and when the natural and technical import unite upon a word, both rules combine to control its construction. 1 Col. 359. The omission of a letter will not ordinarily affect the meaning of a word unless such omission makes a word of another signification. 3 Salkeld 225.
