This statute was passed in the year 1275 for various purposes including to enforce the enactment of the Magna Carta against excessive fines, to protect the property of the Church from the King and the noblemen, to provide for free election of sheriffs, coroners, conservators without undue influence and to correct abuses of tenures particularly as to marriage of wards, regulating the levying of tolls, etc.
