Treaty of Rome in Global Commerce Policy
In this regard, a definition of this issue is as follows: signed on 25 March 1957 by what became the six original members of the European Economic Community (EEC) and entered into force on 1 January 1958. The six were Belgium, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The Treaty has articles dealing with the free movement of goods, establishment of a customs union, elimination of quantitative restrictions, agriculture, free movement of persons, services and capital, a common transport policy, competition and taxation policy, economic and trade policy, social policy, establishment of a European Investment Bank, association of overseas countries and territories with the treaty, and institutional measures. The entries on trade policy are here. Another treaty signed at Rome at the same time was the one establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). This Dictionary is not further concerned with Euratom, and “Treaty of Rome” in these pages always refers to the treaty establishing the European Economic Community.
