Traditional knowledge in Global Commerce Policy

In this regard, traditional knowledge is: a new subject in discussions concerning the protection of intellectual property rights. WIPO says that there is no agreed definition, but it is seen as ecompassing medicinal, agricultural and ecological knowledge, music and dance, stories and poetry (folklore), the production of artefacts and spiritual expressions. Traditional knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation orally and by example. The entries on trade policy are here. All of these characteristics make the development of a framework of protection a difficult task because intellectual property rights are best suited for codified and documented materials. The Convention on Biological Diversity enjoins its parties to respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and and local communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
