Trade embargo in Global Commerce Policy

In this regard, trade embargo is: a ban on trade with a specified country, usually imposed through a United Nations decision, but sometimes based on unilateral or regional action. An example of a justification for a trade embargo can be found in the security exceptions written into the GATS and GATT which specifically allow the suspension of obligations under the agreements if this is necessary for conforming with United Nations decisions.
