Meaning of Tonnage Duty

A tax or duty imposed on vessels as such at a specified rate per ton of capacity or weight of registered tonnage , computed according to prescribed rules of admeasurement . See state Tonnage Tax Cases, 12 Wall (U.S.) 204, 20 L.Ed. 370. The term is also used to refer to any tax for the privilege of entering a port and navigating the navigable waters of the State and without any service having been rendered to same. See Parkersburg & O. river Tramp. Co. v Parkersburg, 107 U.S. 691, 2 S.Ct. 732, 27 L.Ed. 584.
