Third World

Notion of Third World

The meaning of Third World may be as follows: A term widely used in the past to refer to those nations not aligned with the U.S. or the Soviet Union during the Cold War era. The term also, independent from the U.S./Soviet engagement during the Cold War, is used to refer to poor nations, and is sometimes used with the terms “developing” or “underdeveloped” nations.

Definition of Third World

The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Third World: This way of categorizing societies has lost much of its meaning with the breakup of the Soviet Union and the decline of communism as an economic system. First world countries once referred to the developed, capitalist societies, while the second world identified the developed socialist societies. Third world countries were those large political communities in the initial stages of development while fourth world societies are those that are traditional communities marginalized from economic development and political power. The concept of ‘fourth world’ has been applied to the aboriginal communities of north America.

Third world in Global Commerce Policy

In this regard, third world is: a translation of the French word tiers-monde. The entries on trade policy are here. It generally was understood to include the countries that were not included in the group of industrialized democracies (the first world) or the communist countries (the second world).
