Temporary Special Measures
Temporary Special Measures in Voting Law
Definition of Temporary Special Measures in the context of the United States election law: Policies adopted and implemented often to increase women’s access to the political sphere. These tackle the structural barriers that women face in socalled ‘malestream’ or male-dominated electoral politics, thereby leveling the playing field. Special measures are intended to be temporary, in place until such time as structural impediments to the equal participation of women are removed (see Article 4 of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW -1979)).
