It established the ATA Carnet, an international customs clearance document, which allows the temporary import of goods required for fairs and exhibitions, commercial samples, professional equipment, and sporting and musical equipment without the need to pay customs duties or the posting of a bond. The Carnet is normally valid for one year, and goods have to be re-exported within that time. The Convention was updated by the Istanbul Convention which entered into force in 1993.[1]
