Tax-Exempt Organization Definition (in the Accounting Vocabulary)

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants offers the following definition of Tax-Exempt Organization in a way that is easy for anybody to understand: An incorporated organization which exists for educational or charitable purposes, and from which its shareholders or trustees do not benefit financially. Also called NOT-FOR-PROFIT organization.
